Author: Trevor Peterson Title: Effect of Time Pressure and Task Uncertainty on I luman Operator Performance and Workload for Autonomous Aerial Vehicle Missions Institution: Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Year: 2010 Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are being utilized at an increasing rate for a number of military applications. The potential for their use in the national airspace is also of interest to the Federal Aviation Administration, but there are some concerns about the safety of Hying unmanned aircraft. The role of a UAS operator differs from that of a pilot in a manned aircraft, and this new role creates a need for a shift in interface and task design in order to take advantage of the full potential of these systems. This study examined the effect of time pressure and task uncertainty ha\e on autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle operator task performance and workload. Thirty undergraduate students at Embry-Riddlc Aeronautical University participated in this study. The primary task was image identification, and secondary tasks consisted of responding to exents encountered in typical UAS operations. Time pressure was found to produce a significant difference in subjective workload ratings as well as secondary task performance scores, while task uncertainty was found to produce a significant difference in the primary task performance scores. The results were examined, and recommendations for future research are discussed. Table ot

An Evaluation of Operator Workload, During Partially-Autonomous Vehicle Operations
A series of three field experiments were conducted to evaluate the level of autonomous mobility for the Army’s Experimental Unmanned ground Vehicle (XUV), during which an assessment of operator mental workload was performed. Workload data collection methods employed were the “NASA Task Load Index”, the “Overall Workload” scale, and experimenter observation during partially autonomous operations...

OBJECTIVE This study examined the impact of increasing automation replanning rates on operator performance and workload when supervising a decentralized network of heterogeneous unmanned vehicles. BACKGROUND Futuristic unmanned vehicles systems will invert the operator-to-vehicle ratio so that one operator can control multiple dissimilar vehicles connected through a decentralized network. Sig...
متن کاملAdaptable and Adaptive Automation for Supervisory Control of Multiple Autonomous Vehicles
Supervisory control of multiple autonomous vehicles raises many issues concerning the balance of system autonomy with human interaction for optimal operator situation awareness and system performance. An unmanned vehicle simulation designed to manipulate the application of automation was used to evaluate participants’ performance on image analysis tasks under two automation control schemes: ada...
متن کاملMixed-Initiative Control for Collaborative Countermine Operations
This paper discusses experimental results achieved by using mixed initiative robot behavior to address the challenges of detecting and marking buried metal landmines. Mission requirements pertaining to communication bandwidth and operator workload precluded conventional approaches to communication and tasking. Instead, a framework for sharing control and communicating “behavior intent” was deve...
متن کاملMission Control of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: A Workload Analysis
With unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), 36 licensed pilots flew both single-UAV and dual-UAV simulated military missions. Pilots were required to navigate each UAV through a series of mission legs in one of the following three conditions: a baseline condition, an auditory autoalert condition, and an autopilot condition. Pilots were responsible for (a) mission completion, (b) target search, and (c...
